I’ve been on my entrepreneurial journey for many years but kicked it up over a year ago. All I can say is “wow” – it’s been quite the rollercoaster of a ride. When I was working towards earning my MBA around the dot-com burst, the “plan” for a startup was simple. Create a 20-30 page business plan, shop it around for funding and off you go. Fast forward to today and I can’t imagine creating a 20-30 page business plan. Not that I’m saying planning is a bad thing – it’s important. But with Lean Startup, Customer Development, etc – there are now better and smarter ways to validate an idea and test the market. Cause at the end of the day, the market (your Customers) dictate your success.
Aside from these new methodologies, the cost and accessibility of technology for both development and deployment have plummeted. What would have taken 6 or 7 figures to bring to market in 2000 can now be done for hundreds of dollars.
My background is in product development and engineering. What I’ve found is that products alone won’t enable a company to survive – there’s too many products and services trying to capture a Customer’s attention. You need sales and marketing too.
In my blog postings, I want to share with you my experiences and thoughts on how to be a successful company from both a product perspective as well as sales. These are indeed exciting times! Best wishes…
